“I coached an Engineering VP that engaged in “bullying” behaviors that he did not realize were getting in the way of his success and his organization’s success.   Because I was able to establish a strong, trusting relationship with him and demonstrated I was not going to shy away from tough conversations he began to see me as a key ally in his success.  He listened without questioning my intentions as to how his behaviors were affecting others -  including people on his own team.  He wanted to change their perception of him as a “bully” especially with a female peer.  I built agreements with him and her on meeting with each to get their feedback on the difficulties they were having with each other.  I met separately with each and shared how to “listen for understanding”.  Each time I met with them separately I demonstrated this until they each felt understood.  They both agreed on working to understand each other better and giving each other the benefit of the doubt.  We finally had a meeting of the three of us where we discussed how to move forward with a successful partnership and how to model these behaviors for their organizations.  Each leader expressed how pleasantly surprised they were to experience a much more productive working relationship afterward.”
